A suspected serial killer has been arrested in Cross River State after security operatives uncovered multiple shallow graves hidden inside a forest in Odukpani Local Government Area.

The suspect, identified as Akaninyene, was apprehended in Creektown following intelligence reports linking him to the disappearance and killing of several residents in the area. According to reports, operatives traced him to a secluded hut located deep inside the Abanyama forest in Ukim Ita community.

Local sources said a joint operation involving military personnel, tactical security teams, community youths, and elders stormed the hideout after days of surveillance. The suspect allegedly attempted to flee after noticing the approaching operatives but was quickly captured before escaping further into the forest.

During a search of the area, security agents reportedly discovered several shallow graves concealed beneath plantain plantations. Witnesses claimed many of the bodies recovered were missing their heads, raising fears that the killings may have been carried out over a long period without detection.

Residents were thrown into shock after the suspect allegedly confessed during interrogation to being involved in the killing of numerous people within the community. Reports also allege that he revealed details of how victims were lured before being murdered.

The latest alleged killing, said to have occurred earlier this week, reportedly triggered suspicion within the community after residents heard distress calls and unusual movements near the forest area.

Community leaders and local government officials are said to have alerted security agencies after repeated complaints over missing persons in the area. The operation eventually led to the suspect’s arrest and the discovery of the graves.

The incident has sparked widespread fear and outrage across Odukpani, with residents demanding a thorough investigation and justice for families of the victims.

Meanwhile, the Cross River State Police Command has stated that the incident is still being verified as investigations continue.
