The Cross River State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of two police officers allegedly intercepted with firearms and live ammunition in connection with the ongoing Ugep–Idomi communal crisis in Cross River State.
In a press release issued on Tuesday, the Command clarified that the incident occurred on May 5, 2026, during a joint stop-and-search operation carried out by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force alongside personnel of the Nigerian Army in Biase Local Government Area.
According to the statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, the two suspects seen in a viral video circulating online were identified as serving officers attached to the Akwa Ibom State Police Command.
The police disclosed that the suspects were intercepted while riding on a motorcycle and were allegedly found in possession of firearms and live ammunition at the time of their arrest.
The statement further revealed that the officers were immediately taken into custody and later transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Calabar, where a full investigation is currently underway.
Commissioner of Police, Rashid B. Afegbua, has reportedly ordered a comprehensive investigation to uncover the motive behind the incident and determine the full circumstances surrounding the actions of the suspects.
The Command assured residents that anyone found culpable would face the full weight of the law, regardless of status or affiliation, while reiterating its commitment to transparency, accountability, and the protection of lives and property across Cross River State.
The viral incident has continued to generate reactions online amid heightened tensions surrounding the Ugep–Idomi communal crisis.
