Cross River-based activist and content creator, MC Okrika, has intensified his criticism of landlords accused of imposing excessive rent increases on tenants, citing a specific case in Ikom Local Government Area where annual rent was reportedly increased from ₦400,000 to ₦1 million.
Speaking during a recent commentary, MC Okrika described the increase as exploitative and insensitive, particularly at a time when many residents are struggling with the rising cost of living.
As evidence, the activist displayed a rent increment notice allegedly issued through solicitors acting on behalf of a landlord identified as Sir Patrick Obasi. The letter informed tenants of what was described as a "slight increment" in annual rent from ₦400,000 to ₦1,000,000, effective from the next rental season.
The notice further stated that any tenant unwilling to accept the new rent would have the option of vacating the premises, with the letter serving as a notice to quit.
MC Okrika questioned how a 150 percent increase could be described as a "slight increment," arguing that such actions place an unbearable burden on tenants and small business owners.
He also alleged that some tenants had previously invested personal funds in improving rented properties, only to be met with steep rent increases afterward. According to him, landlords have a right to review rental prices, but such reviews should be reasonable and reflect prevailing economic realities.
The activist vowed to support affected tenants in seeking legal redress and called on relevant authorities to examine cases of excessive rent increases across Cross River State.
The development has generated reactions on social media, with many residents debating the balance between landlords' property rights and the need to protect tenants from sudden and substantial rent hikes.
