The Cross River State Government has extended the curfew imposed on Ugep and Idomi communities in Yakurr Local Government Area by another one week, citing continued security concerns and the need to prevent further escalation of the lingering communal crisis.
The restriction, which was initially introduced following renewed tension linked to a long-standing communal dispute, was extended after security assessments reportedly indicated that the situation remained sensitive and required continued monitoring.
The crisis between the neighbouring communities recently heightened after renewed violence reportedly led to the death of residents, increasing fears of possible retaliation and further breakdown of peace in the area. Security agencies were subsequently deployed to restore calm and maintain order.
Authorities had earlier announced movement restrictions as part of measures to control activities capable of worsening the situation, while urging residents and community leaders to cooperate with security personnel.
The Yakurr Local Government Council and traditional authorities have also been involved in efforts to identify those responsible for actions believed to have contributed to renewed hostility, with calls for peace and accountability among the affected communities.
Residents are expected to continue complying with the curfew directive as government works with stakeholders to restore lasting peace and prevent further loss of lives and property.
