A man has died following a stabbing incident along Barracks Road in Calabar, Cross River State, with police confirming the arrest of a suspect in connection with the killing.
The incident, which occurred on Monday, June 15, 2026, was reportedly linked to an earlier altercation that took place a day before between the suspect, identified as Idris Abdullahi, 49, and a group of youths popularly known as "street boys."
According to information made available to security operatives, the suspect allegedly sustained injuries during the altercation, which occurred on Sunday, June 14, 2026, at about 6:05 p.m. along Mary Slessor Road.
Police sources disclosed that the situation escalated the following day when Abdullahi allegedly traced one of the youths believed to have been involved in the earlier confrontation.
The victim was reportedly chased to the Chronicle area on Barracks Road, opposite Akim Police Barracks, where he was allegedly stabbed with a knife.
Eyewitnesses said the victim collapsed after sustaining severe injuries from the attack. He was immediately rushed to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) for urgent medical attention.
Despite efforts by medical personnel to save his life, doctors later confirmed him dead.
The deceased's body has since been deposited at the General Hospital Mortuary, where an autopsy is expected to be conducted as part of ongoing investigations.
Police authorities confirmed that the suspect was arrested shortly after the incident and is currently in custody.
The case is expected to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a detailed investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the killing and establish any additional facts related to the incident.
Authorities have urged residents to remain calm and allow investigators to carry out their work while assuring the public that justice will be pursued in accordance with the law.
