Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has alleged that there is a coordinated effort by individuals within the ruling establishment to prevent the ADC from participating in the 2027 general elections.

In a statement issued on Monday through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku claimed he had received credible intelligence suggesting that political and legal strategies were being deployed to frustrate the opposition party ahead of the polls.

According to him, the alleged plot is aimed at weakening the ADC because it has emerged as what he described as the most credible alternative platform to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next general election.

Atiku argued that attempts to destabilize or exclude the ADC from the electoral process raise serious concerns about Nigeria's democratic future. He questioned why the ruling party would allegedly seek to undermine the opposition if it was truly confident of its popularity among Nigerians.

He further alleged that anti-democratic forces were working behind the scenes to create confusion within the opposition while simultaneously targeting the ADC through legal and political means.

The former vice president warned that any attempt to prevent a duly registered political party from participating in elections would amount to an assault on Nigeria's democracy and the constitutional rights of citizens to freely choose their leaders.

Atiku urged Nigerians, civil society organisations, and the international community to remain vigilant and defend democratic principles against any action capable of undermining free, fair, and credible elections.

As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official response from the APC or the relevant electoral authorities regarding Atiku's allegations.
