Teachers across Cross River State on Tuesday joined a nationwide protest organized by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) to demand the safe release of teachers and pupils abducted in Oyo State.
The peaceful demonstration, held in Calabar, was part of a directive issued by the national leadership of the union in response to the kidnapping of teachers and students during an attack on schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State about two weeks ago.
Leading the protest, Cross River State NUT Chairman, Gregory Olaye, expressed concern over the continued captivity of some of the victims and described the incident as a disturbing reminder of the growing insecurity facing schools across Nigeria.
According to Olaye, attacks on educational institutions pose a serious threat to the nation's future and undermine efforts to provide a safe learning environment for teachers and students. He stressed the need for governments at all levels to prioritize school security and protect educators and learners from criminal attacks.
The union leader called on security agencies to intensify efforts toward securing the release of the abducted victims and ensuring that those responsible are brought to justice.
He also urged authorities to strengthen security measures in schools nationwide to prevent similar incidents from recurring.
The protest formed part of a coordinated nationwide action by teachers' unions across the country, as educators continue to raise concerns over the safety of schools and the increasing threat of kidnappings targeting teachers and students.
The NUT maintained that safeguarding schools remains essential to protecting the future of education in Nigeria and called for urgent action to secure all victims still in captivity.
