Former Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, has expressed concern over the worsening insecurity in Nigeria, calling for stronger leadership and decisive action to address the country's growing security challenges.
Welby made the remarks during his visit to Cross River State, where he held a series of engagements focused on interfaith dialogue, peacebuilding, and governance.
The former Archbishop was received at the Government House in Calabar by the Deputy Governor of Cross River State, Rt. Hon. Peter Odey, who represented Governor Bassey Otu. He was later honoured at a state banquet held at Peregrino Hall.
Although the visit centred on promoting peace and religious cooperation, discussions also touched on critical national issues, including insecurity, corruption, governance, and the increasing cases of kidnapping across the country.
Speaking during the engagement, Governor Bassey Otu described Welby as a respected global advocate for peace, reconciliation, and justice. He noted that the Cross River State Government remains committed to strengthening governance through dialogue, inclusion, and policies that promote social stability.
Welby, who said his relationship with Nigeria dates back to 1978, observed that corruption and weak institutions have continued to hinder the country's development and undermine public confidence in government.
He stressed that tackling insecurity requires effective governance, stronger institutions, and greater accountability from public leaders.
The visit concluded with renewed calls for collaborative efforts among government, religious leaders, and other stakeholders to promote peace, restore public trust, and confront the security challenges facing Nigeria.
