Former Cross River State Governor and 2027 presidential candidate of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Donald Duke, has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies, particularly the removal of fuel subsidy, saying the policy has increased government revenue while worsening hardship for Nigerians.
Duke, in an interview reported by The Guardian, argued that the subsidy system has simply been replaced with an alternative that he described as poorly managed, generating more money for government while putting additional pressure on citizens and the economy.
The former governor said Nigeria needs to move beyond arguments over whether fuel subsidy should exist and instead adopt economic policies that can grow the economy while reducing poverty and improving the living conditions of ordinary Nigerians.
He also warned that continuing with the current economic direction would not deliver the broad-based development Nigerians need. Duke said the PRP would prioritise productive assets, better management of the country’s resources and policies focused on improving livelihoods if elected in 2027.
The comments come as economic hardship, fuel prices and the impact of the Federal Government’s reforms increasingly dominate political discussions ahead of the 2027 elections.
