A UN-backed Commission on Human Rights has warned that renewed fighting, political exclusion and weak institutions in South Sudan are raising the risk of further atrocities.

The Commission recorded 407 ceasefire violations between August 2025 and January 2026. Nearly half of the key provisions of the 2018 peace agreement remain unimplemented, including the unification of security forces.

It warned that, as elections approach, a premature rush to the polls without safeguards for inclusive political participation, independent justice and peaceful competition could deepen divisions and raise the risk of genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes and ethnic cleansing. Almost half of the key provisions of the 2018 peace agreement have yet to be implemented, such as the unification of security forces.
