Governor Bassey Otu has reaffirmed Cross River State's commitment to environmental sustainability, climate resilience, and global partnerships following his participation in the 2026 London Climate Action Week in the United Kingdom.
The governor disclosed that he had the opportunity to engage with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, as well as the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, during the international climate gathering, which attracted more than 75,000 participants from around the world.
London Climate Action Week is regarded as one of the world's largest independent climate events, bringing together governments, businesses, development partners, environmental experts, and civil society organizations to advance practical solutions to climate challenges and accelerate climate action.
According to Governor Otu, Cross River State was among the few subnational governments from Nigeria represented at the conference, alongside Lagos State, underscoring the state's growing relevance in global conversations on environmental sustainability and climate governance.
The governor noted that Cross River's participation reflects the administration's dedication to sustainable development, environmental conservation, climate adaptation, and the pursuit of strategic partnerships capable of driving economic growth and improving the welfare of residents.
He emphasized that Cross River's rich biodiversity and extensive forest resources place the state in a unique position to contribute meaningfully to national and global climate objectives.
Governor Otu further stated that his administration remains committed to implementing climate-smart policies and environmental initiatives aimed at protecting natural resources while creating opportunities for sustainable development.
Cross River State is home to some of Nigeria's most significant forest reserves and has long been recognized for its role in biodiversity conservation, carbon sequestration, and environmental protection.
Observers say the governor's participation in the international climate conference could open new opportunities for collaboration, climate financing, investment in green infrastructure, and support for conservation initiatives within the state.
The engagement also comes as governments across the world intensify efforts to address climate change through innovative policies, renewable energy investments, forest protection programs, and sustainable economic development strategies.
