The Nigerian Navy has intensified its operations against criminal networks operating along the Cross River waterways, following the arrest of a suspected collaborator allegedly linked to a militant support structure in the area.
The suspect, identified as Mr Ubong Clement, was arrested by personnel of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) VICTORY deployed at the Forward Security Outpost on Dayspring Island, Akpabuyo Local Government Area of Cross River State.
According to the Navy, the arrest was carried out as part of intelligence-driven operations aimed at dismantling networks that provide support, logistics and other assistance to militant groups operating within the waterways.
Preliminary investigations reportedly showed that the suspect allegedly maintained contact with members of militant groups around the Dayspring Island axis and was involved in activities believed to have undermined security operations in the area.
Security sources said the development forms part of a wider crackdown by the Navy on criminal activities, including militancy and maritime-related crimes around the Calabar waterways, where authorities have been working to restore safer movement and economic activities.
The suspect was later handed over to the Department of State Services (DSS), Cross River State Command, for further investigation and possible prosecution in line with the law.
The Nigerian Navy said it would continue sustained operations against criminal elements and their collaborators, adding that targeting support networks remains key to reducing the strength of armed groups operating within the maritime environment.
