"They Want to Destroy Me" – Cross River NDC Chairman Says APC Trying to Silence Opposition

The Chairman of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Cross River State, Goddie Akpama, has alleged that there is a coordinated plot to weaken the opposition in the state through blackmail, misinformation and character assassination ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Akpama made the allegation while responding to claims circulating on social media accusing him of secretly working for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). He described the allegations as false, politically motivated and aimed at damaging both his reputation and the growing influence of the NDC in Cross River State.

To support his position, the NDC chairman presented copies of his resignation letter from the Cross River State Government, showing that he formally resigned his appointment on February 16, 2026. According to him, the resignation was officially acknowledged by the Office of the Secretary to the State Government months before the allegations against him surfaced.

Akpama also addressed reports that salaries continued to be paid into his account after he left government service. He explained that the payments resulted from an administrative error and that once he discovered the mistake, he immediately refunded the entire amount to the state government.

He further presented official refund receipts as evidence, accusing those behind the allegations of deliberately ignoring the documents while circulating only salary payment records to create a misleading narrative.

According to him, if he were truly working for the APC as alleged, there would have been no reason to resign his government appointment or refund the salaries mistakenly paid into his account.

The NDC chairman maintained that the campaign against him is intended to intimidate opposition figures and suppress alternative political voices in Cross River State as preparations for the 2027 governorship election gather momentum.

He also criticised what he described as the weaponisation of internal political disagreements, insisting that expressing different opinions within a democratic party should not be treated as betrayal or disloyalty.

Akpama called on members of the NDC to ignore what he termed a calculated smear campaign and remain focused on strengthening the party's grassroots structures across the state. He reaffirmed his loyalty to the NDC, stressing that no amount of blackmail or propaganda would force him to abandon the party or compromise his principles.
