At least three persons are feared dead while 35 others sustained injuries following the derailment of the Warri-Itakpe train in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State.
The incident occurred on Monday after four coaches reportedly left the rail track, triggering an emergency response involving security agencies, local authorities, and residents who assisted in rescuing trapped passengers.
Chairman of Ika North-East Local Government Council, Mr. Monday Odigwe, disclosed that the injured victims were receiving treatment in three hospitals across the area. According to him, 13 victims were admitted at Central Hospital, Agbor, while 12 were taken to General Hospital, Owa-Oyibu, and 10 others to General Hospital, Owa-Alero.
Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, expressed sadness over the accident, describing it as a heartbreaking tragedy. The governor sympathized with the families of the deceased and wished those injured a speedy recovery.
He also assured residents that the state government had mobilized relevant authorities to the scene to coordinate rescue efforts and provide support to victims affected by the incident.
