A stakeholder from Ikom Local Government Area, Mr. Ndifon Joseph, has criticized the state of development in Ikom/Boki Federal Constituency, alleging that residents have endured years of neglect, worsening infrastructure, and inadequate representation under the current administration.
In a statement made available to the public, Joseph said many communities in Ikom and Boki that once experienced developmental progress now face growing challenges, including poor road networks, prolonged power outages, and declining economic opportunities.
According to him, one of the most pressing concerns is the electricity crisis in Ikom, where residents have reportedly endured little or no public power supply for over a year. He noted that the situation has negatively affected businesses, students, healthcare services, and households.
He explained that artisans and small-scale entrepreneurs, including barbers, welders, tailors, and cold-room operators, have been forced to rely on expensive generators or shut down operations entirely due to the prolonged blackout. The development, he said, has further weakened the local economy and discouraged potential investors.
Joseph also expressed concern over the condition of major roads within the constituency, particularly the abandoned Boki East-West Road, which he described as a critical infrastructure project capable of transforming economic activities in the area if completed.
He lamented that farmers, traders, and residents continue to face transportation difficulties as poor road conditions increase travel time and costs. He further cited the deteriorating state of the Ikom–Boki–Obudu Road, especially during the rainy season, as another major challenge affecting movement and commerce.
The stakeholder equally questioned what he described as the lack of visible federal projects and interventions in the constituency, particularly in addressing electricity and road infrastructure challenges.
Joseph said growing dissatisfaction among residents has led many stakeholders to rally behind Hon. Pius Besong Abang of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), whom he described as a grassroots politician capable of providing effective representation and driving development.
He maintained that the people of Ikom and Boki deserve improved infrastructure, reliable electricity, economic opportunities, youth empowerment programmes, and leaders who prioritize service delivery over politics.
The statement comes amid increasing political discussions ahead of future electoral contests in the constituency, with stakeholders calling for greater accountability and tangible development initiatives.
