A High Court sitting in Calabar, Cross River State, has convicted and ordered the permanent remand of Sunday Eyo in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Service for raping a 16-year-old girl.
Justice Blessing Egwu delivered the judgment after finding Eyo guilty of the offence and directing that he remain in correctional custody following his conviction.
The verdict has been described as a significant step in strengthening efforts to combat sexual and gender-based violence and protect children through the justice system.
Reacting to the judgment, the Basic Rights Council Initiative (BRCI) commended the Cross River State Police Command for its role in the investigation and prosecution process.
Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, BRCI’s James Ibor also praised the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Ededem Ani, and the Director of Public Prosecutions, Okoi Ukam, for their contributions toward securing the conviction.
The organisation recognised Linda Asuquo for her commitment throughout the prosecution, describing her efforts as instrumental to the successful conclusion of the case.
BRCI also commended its staff and partner civil society organisations for their continued advocacy for child protection, stressing that Cross River remained committed to ending all forms of violence against children.
The group urged government agencies, civil society organisations, communities and residents to work together to prevent child abuse, support survivors and ensure perpetrators face justice.
