The Cross River State Government has officially handed over the management of the Obudu Mountain Resort to a private company under a 25-year concession agreement, in what officials describe as a major step towards restoring one of Nigeria's biggest tourism destinations.
The agreement is expected to bring fresh investment into the famous mountain resort, improve facilities, attract more tourists and create jobs for people living around Obanliku and neighbouring communities.
For many years, the Obudu Ranch Resort has struggled with poor maintenance, damaged infrastructure and a sharp decline in visitor numbers. Once regarded as one of Africa's leading tourist destinations, several of its major attractions, including the cable car, have suffered from years of neglect.
State officials believe allowing a private investor to manage the resort will speed up its rehabilitation without placing the financial burden entirely on the government.
Residents and tourism stakeholders, however, say they will be watching closely to ensure the concession benefits Cross River people. Some have called for transparency in the agreement, insisting that local communities should benefit through employment opportunities, business growth and improved infrastructure.
Analysts also say the success of the concession will depend on whether the investor keeps to its promises of restoring facilities, upgrading accommodation, improving access roads and marketing the resort internationally.
The Obudu Mountain Resort, located in Obanliku Local Government Area, remains one of Nigeria's most recognised tourism destinations because of its cool weather, scenic mountains and natural attractions. The state government hopes the concession will return the resort to its former glory and make it a major contributor to the state's economy once again.
