The crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State has taken another serious turn, as another faction of the party has announced its own governorship candidate for the 2027 general election.

This latest development comes only a few days after a faction of the PDP held its governorship primary in Calabar and produced Sir Arthur Jarvis Archibong as the party's governorship candidate.

The Arthur Jarvis faction also went ahead to conduct primaries for the Senate, House of Representatives and Cross River State House of Assembly, saying it was preparing the party for the 2027 general elections.

However, another faction of the party has now conducted a separate exercise and produced its own governorship candidate.

At a press briefing in Calabar, the faction unveiled Mr. Julius Udayi, a tax consultant, as its governorship candidate. The group also presented candidates for the three senatorial districts, the eight House of Representatives seats and all the State House of Assembly constituencies.

Speaking during the unveiling, Julius Udayi insisted that his faction is the authentic and legally recognised PDP in Cross River State. According to him, the candidates produced by his group are the rightful flag bearers of the party for the 2027 elections.

The latest development has further exposed the deep division within the PDP in Cross River State. With both factions presenting different governorship candidates and separate lists of candidates for other elective positions, many party members and supporters are now confused about who is the authentic candidate of the party.

Political observers believe the crisis could weaken the PDP's chances in the 2027 elections if the party fails to resolve its internal problems before the campaigns begin.

As the crisis continues, attention is now on the national leadership of the PDP and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which will eventually determine which faction and candidates will be officially recognised.

For now, the Cross River PDP remains divided, with Sir Arthur Jarvis Archibong and Julius Udayi both laying claim to the party's governorship ticket ahead of the 2027 general election.
