A wave of grief has engulfed Ikot Anwatim, off the Highway in Calabar, following the devastating landslide that claimed the lives of five people, including four children from the same family. The tragic incident, which occurred after heavy rainfall, left residents in shock as rescue efforts recovered the victims from the collapsed earth. The victims included four children of Mr. Kingsley Edu and another resident, Mr. Idorenyin Sunday, whose death has further deepened the community's sorrow.
On Sunday, July 12, 2026, Governor Bassey Otu visited Ikot Anwatim despite the persistent rainfall and difficult terrain to sympathize with the bereaved families.
During the visit, the governor met with Mr. Kingsley Edu, who lost his four children in the disaster, and also condoled with the children of the late Mr. Idorenyin Sunday. He assured the affected families that the Cross River State Government would stand by them and provide the necessary support to help them through the painful period.
Governor Otu described the incident as heartbreaking and prayed for the peaceful repose of the victims. He encouraged the families to remain strong, assuring them that they would not face the difficult moment alone. His visit was welcomed by residents, who commended the governor for personally identifying with the victims despite the challenging weather conditions.
