Residents of Calabar have been left saddened following the death of a female passenger, Mrs. Affiong Peters, who suffered a medical emergency while travelling in a commercial mini bus on Saturday night.
According to the Cross River State Police Command, the incident happened at about 11:30 p.m. while the commercial bus was conveying eight passengers from Watt Roundabout towards the Edgerly–Mbukpa–Afukam axis. The driver, Mr. John Okon John, later reported the incident at Atakpa Police Station.
Police said the incident occurred when one of the passengers requested to stop at Edgerly by William George. As passengers made room for the person to alight, Mrs. Affiong Peters also stepped out of the vehicle. Moments later, she suddenly sat on the ground, became unresponsive and was unable to speak.
Other passengers quickly came to her aid and assisted in carrying her back into the bus before rushing her to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) for emergency treatment. Despite efforts by medical personnel, she was later confirmed dead.
The Cross River State Police Command said the deceased's family has been identified and officially informed of the development. The family is currently making arrangements for the preservation of her remains.
The police, through the Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday, extended their condolences to the bereaved family and confirmed that preliminary findings indicate the woman suffered a medical emergency before her death. Further details may emerge as investigations continue.
