Thousands of supporters on Saturday reportedly dumped the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during a well-attended political gathering held in Ekori, Yakurr Local Government Area, with similar defections also recorded across major communities in Obubra Local Government Area of Cross River State.

The defectors were formally received into the PDP by the party's State Secretary, Joe Bisong, in the presence of the party's presidential candidate, Senator Sandy Onor, governorship candidate, Sir Arthur Jarvis Archibong, and other leaders and stakeholders of the party.

One of the prominent figures who joined the PDP was Barr. Wekekọ Eteng Ekpe, PhD, from Ekori, alongside many other supporters who pledged allegiance to the opposition party.

A symbolic moment at the event saw several of the new members publicly burn brooms, the symbol of the APC, before embracing the umbrella, the official symbol of the PDP. The action drew loud cheers from party supporters and was presented by PDP leaders as a sign of the defectors' commitment to their new political home.

Addressing the gathering, party leaders welcomed the new members and assured them of equal opportunities within the PDP. They also called for unity and collective efforts to strengthen the party ahead of future political contests in Cross River State,

The latest wave of defections is expected to further intensify political activities in Yakurr and Obubra, two key local government areas in the Central Senatorial District, as parties continue to mobilise support ahead of the next election cycle.
