Cross River-based activist and social commentator MC Okrika has criticized the Commissioner for Education, Senator Stephen Odey, following an alleged phone conversation with a young blogger who drew attention to the poor condition of a public school in Calabar.
In a video commentary circulating on social media, MC Okrika reacted to an audio recording purportedly capturing a conversation between the Commissioner and the blogger. According to Okrika, he was disappointed by the Commissioner's alleged response to the concerns raised about the school.
While acknowledging claims by the Commissioner that the Prince Bassey Otu administration has renovated over 300 schools across Cross River State, Okrika challenged the Ministry of Education to make the list of those schools public.
He questioned where the renovated schools are located and called on the Commissioner to provide evidence of the projects, arguing that transparency would help reassure residents about the government's investments in education.
Okrika also alleged that the Commissioner threatened the blogger with imprisonment over future social media posts, describing such an approach as inappropriate if the recording accurately reflects the conversation. He maintained that public officials should respond to citizens' complaints with action rather than intimidation.
The activist urged residents and bloggers to continue highlighting the condition of public schools across the state, saying citizens have the right to demand improved learning environments for children.
As of the time of filing this report, the Cross River State Ministry of Education has not publicly responded to MC Okrika's remarks. However, the Commissioner has reportedly maintained that more than 300 schools have been renovated under the current administration.
