A one-year-old girl has reportedly lost her life after severe flooding triggered by a heavy overnight rainfall swept through parts of Calabar, the Cross River State capital.
The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday at Mayne Avenue, off Atu Street in Calabar South Local Government Area, where floodwaters reportedly entered residential buildings while many residents were still asleep.
According to eyewitness accounts, the child's parents were caught unaware as the water level rose rapidly inside their apartment. Before they could move to safety, the room had become heavily flooded, making it impossible to rescue the infant in time.
Beyond the heartbreaking loss of life, residents said the flood destroyed household property, important documents, clothing, food items, school materials and other valuables. Some business owners also lamented heavy financial losses after floodwaters damaged goods and equipment.
Several parts of the affected community were also left with collapsed drainage channels, damaged walls and sections of road washed away by the powerful flood, raising fresh concerns over the city's drainage infrastructure and flood control measures.
Residents have appealed to the Cross River State Government and relevant authorities to urgently clear blocked drainage systems, repair damaged roads and implement lasting flood-control measures to prevent similar tragedies during the rainy season.
The incident has once again renewed public concern over recurring floods in Calabar, with many residents urging authorities to act before more lives and property are lost.
