Spain have been crowned champions of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating defending champions Argentina 1-0 in a tense final played on Sunday at the New York/New Jersey Stadium in the United States.
The only goal of the match came in extra time when Ferran Torres found the back of the net to hand La Roja their second FIFA World Cup title. The game ended goalless after 90 minutes before Torres broke the deadlock in the 106th minute.
Argentina, led by football legend Lionel Messi, fought hard but could not find an equaliser. The defeat ended the South American side's hopes of successfully defending the World Cup they won in Qatar in 2022. It is also expected to be Messi's final appearance at the FIFA World Cup.
Spain dominated much of the encounter with impressive ball possession and several scoring chances before finally breaking Argentina's stubborn defence in extra time. Goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez made a number of important saves, but he could not stop Torres' decisive strike.
The victory marks Spain's second World Cup triumph, adding to the title they first won in South Africa in 2010. It also caps an impressive run for the Spanish side, who eliminated Portugal, Belgium and France on their way to the final before overcoming Argentina to lift football's biggest trophy.
