Governor Bassey Otu has said his administration has carried out road construction and rehabilitation projects across all 18 local government areas of Cross River State, describing road infrastructure as one of the biggest priorities of his government.
Speaking during an interview, the governor said no economy can grow without good roads, stressing that improved road networks are key to boosting agriculture, trade, tourism and investment across the state.
According to him, the state government has focused on opening up communities through both urban and rural road projects to make it easier for residents, farmers and businesses to move people and goods.
Governor Otu said poor road conditions in the past placed a heavy financial burden on Cross Riverians, as many residents spent a large part of their income on transportation.
He noted that although many roads still require attention, significant progress has been made since his administration came into office.
The governor also revealed that his administration is working with the Federal Government to improve major highways, while the state continues to invest in strategic roads and rural access routes that connect farming communities to markets.
Speaking on the challenges facing road construction in the state, Otu pointed to the increasing effects of climate change, saying heavier and more frequent rainfall has caused flooding and accelerated the deterioration of roads.
He explained that the government has responded by redesigning road projects to include bigger drainage channels, larger culverts and wider bridges capable of handling heavy rainfall.
According to him, these additional measures have increased construction costs but are necessary to ensure that roads remain durable and serve communities for many years.
The governor further disclosed that Cross River State is partnering with engineering experts and researchers in Nigeria, South Africa and other countries to explore modern road construction technologies.
He said the state is studying new construction materials, chemical stabilisers and alternative surface treatments that can better withstand prolonged rainfall and reduce the frequent failure of road projects, especially in rural communities.
Governor Otu added that the goal of his administration is to ensure every road project delivers long-term value for public funds and provides lasting benefits to the people of Cross River State.
The remarks come as residents in several parts of the state continue to call for the completion of ongoing road projects and the rehabilitation of federal roads linking Cross River to neighbouring states.
