Hundreds of scrap metal dealers from across Cross River State have thrown their weight behind Governor Bassey Otu’s bid for a second term, declaring that their support for the governor is “4+4 and nothing less.”
The dealers, under the Scrap Dealers Support Group for President Bola Tinubu and Governor Bassey Otu 2027, staged a solidarity rally through major streets of Calabar on Thursday.
Members of the association reportedly came from the 18 local government areas of the state for the rally, which began at Millennium Park and moved through parts of Calabar before returning to the park.
Speaking during the rally, the chairman of the Canaan City Scrap Dealers Association Support Group, Evangelist Kelvin Asuquo, said the group was supporting Otu because of what it described as peace, good governance and an improved business environment in the state.
Asuquo said the scrap dealers were “solidly behind” the governor and would mobilise their members at the grassroots ahead of the 2027 elections.
He further declared that the group would vote for the APC across different levels, from the State House of Assembly to the presidency.
“We want him to continue as our Governor,” Asuquo said, adding that the group would support the APC in the 2027 elections.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the association, Alhaji Umaru Abubakar, described the support for Governor Otu as non-negotiable.
According to him, the scrap dealers were satisfied with what he described as the peace and business-friendly environment under the current administration.
“Most of us are here today to support Governor Bassey Otu for another four years in office. It is four-plus-four and nothing less,” Abubakar said.
The women’s wing of the association also joined the endorsement, with its leader, Hon. Mrs Mercy Mgbe, praising programmes she said had positively affected women, mothers and children in the state.
The dealers also credited Governor Otu with what they described as efforts to restore Cross River’s lost glory after years of decline.
They said they wanted the governor to remain in office so that his administration could continue with what they described as ongoing development across the state.
The rally ended with the group pledging to mobilise its members and networks for Governor Otu and the APC ahead of the 2027 elections.
The endorsement adds the scrap metal dealers to the growing list of groups and interests publicly declaring support for Otu’s second-term ambition as political activities ahead of 2027 continue to gather momentum in Cross River State.
