The Cross River State House of Assembly has approved an upward review of the state’s 2026 Supplementary Appropriation Bill from about N961.62 billion to N963.07 billion, representing an increase of approximately N1.45 billion or 0.15 per cent.

The approval followed the consideration of a report presented by the House Committee on Finance and Appropriation during plenary on Thursday.

Presenting the report, the committee chairman, Hon. Cyril Omini, representing Yakurr II State Constituency, said the adjustment was necessary to accommodate additional financial requirements of the state government.

According to the committee, the upward review is expected to support infrastructure capitalisation, counterpart funding, macroeconomic adjustments and social interventions.

The lawmakers also cited unforeseen expenditures, new policy initiatives and improved revenue prospects as some of the factors behind the supplementary budget review. Other expected outcomes include improved employment opportunities and enhanced public service delivery.

The committee maintained that the adjustment would promote prudent fiscal management, strengthen budget implementation and ensure that available resources are channelled towards priority programmes and projects.

The House subsequently approved the revised figures and authorised the implementation of the supplementary budget in accordance with the law.

The Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem, commended the Finance and Appropriation Committee for what he described as a thorough job.

The latest approval comes as the administration of Governor Bassey Edet Otu continues to implement its 2026 programmes under its “People First” agenda, with the state government expected to deploy the additional resources towards emerging financial needs and priority projects.
