The convoy of Cross River State Deputy Governor, Dr Peter Odey, was involved in a road accident along the Ikom-Calabar Highway near Ugep in Yakurr Local Government Area of the state.
The accident happened on Sunday while the Deputy Governor and members of his team were returning to Calabar after an official engagement in Obanliku Local Government Area.
According to the Deputy Governor’s Press Secretary, Fred Abua, the accident involved a press crew vehicle and a Hilux vehicle in the convoy.
Abua said the accident occurred after the brakes of the press crew vehicle reportedly failed, forcing the driver to lose control and veer off the road.
He stressed that the vehicle conveying the Deputy Governor was not directly involved in the crash and that Dr Peter Odey was safe and unhurt.
However, reports indicate that several members of the convoy sustained injuries, while some vehicles were also damaged.
A source who spoke to Vanguard said the Government House press bus, which was carrying appointees and staff attached to the Office of the Deputy Governor, reportedly veered off its lane around an Army checkpoint in Ugep before crashing into sandbag barricades.
The source also attributed the incident to brake failure.
The exact number of people injured and the extent of the injuries were not immediately confirmed.
The crash has once again drawn attention to the condition of vehicles used for official movements, particularly on major roads such as the Ikom-Calabar Highway.
As of the time of reporting, there was no official confirmation of any serious injury involving the Deputy Governor himself.
Dr Odey was reportedly returning to Calabar when the incident occurred.
Vanguard reported that efforts to obtain further details from other government officials were unsuccessful as of press time.
