Two persons have been confirmed dead after a collapsed refuse dump reportedly impacted a building at Ikot Effanga, along the Old Odukpani Road in Calabar, Cross River State.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, August 28, 2026, throwing residents of the area into confusion.
The Cross River State Police Command, which confirmed the incident, said its personnel responded promptly to the scene following reports of the collapse.
According to the Police, preliminary findings showed that the collapsed refuse had impacted a building reportedly constructed within a valley, killing two occupants.
The deceased were identified as Nfon Imé, a male, and an unidentified female believed to have been inside the building when the incident occurred.
Their remains have since been recovered and deposited at the mortuary.
The Police Command said it is currently assessing the circumstances surrounding the incident, while investigation continues to establish the full facts surrounding the collapse.
The Command urged members of the public to remain calm and avoid speculation as authorities work to ascertain what led to the incident.
It also assured that further details would be released once they are verified and available.
The incident comes amid growing concerns over the safety of structures and settlements located around vulnerable areas, particularly valleys and locations exposed to accumulated waste and erosion.
