The Cross River State Police Command has confirmed the killing of one person during an attack on a cocoa farm in Isibendeghe Community, Boki Local Government Area.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, the Command said the incident was reported at about 1:25 p.m. at the Boki Police Station.
According to the statement, a woman, Madam Etta Maria Ado, of Onisha Farm in Isibendeghe Community, reported that three men from Boje Community, identified as Patrick Otu Debang, James Osa G., and another person popularly known as "Pepsi," allegedly attacked her cocoa farm where three workers were working.
She alleged that the suspects opened fire on the workers, killing one of them, identified as Joseph Francis Friday.
The complainant also told the police that the suspects had allegedly been threatening and harassing her over activities at the cocoa farm before the attack.
The statement added that two other workers, Clinton Abang and Amobi Igwe, escaped during the shooting and later informed the farm owner about the incident.
ASP Akata said detectives from the Boki Police Division visited the scene, where they recovered the body of the deceased with multiple pellet wounds to the chest and abdomen, believed to have been caused by a locally made firearm.
According to the police spokesperson, the body has been deposited in a mortuary for an autopsy, while investigations have commenced to arrest the fleeing suspects.
The Police Command assured residents that further updates would be provided as the investigation progresses.
The incident comes amid heightened tension over the alleged crisis involving the Boje, Nsadop and Isibendeghe communities in Boki Local Government Area.
