A prominent stakeholder in Boki Local Government Area, Chief Enu Caesar, has called on the Cross River State Government and security agencies to immediately investigate and arrest anyone found to be fueling the lingering communal crisis in Boje, Isobendeghe and Nsadop communities.
In a letter addressed to Governor Bassey Otu and copied to the Commissioner of Police, the Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), the Chairman of Boki Local Government Council and the Boki Traditional Rulers Council, Chief Caesar expressed concern that the crisis has become politically motivated and could seriously affect the development of the area.
He warned that the continued tension is threatening the over ₦200 billion investment by PRESCO PLC in Boki, including its out-grower farming programme, which has created jobs and economic opportunities for many residents.
According to him, the unrest could also slow down or affect the ongoing Boki East-West Road project being executed by the state government, a project expected to improve transportation, boost trade, and make it easier for people to access schools, hospitals and markets.
Chief Caesar said many people are now living in fear, with some unable to move freely or farm because of the insecurity caused by the crisis.
He urged Governor Otu to publicly intervene and take decisive steps to restore peace, saying many residents are worried that continued silence could encourage those behind the violence.
The stakeholder also called on the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to investigate political leaders, influencers and any other individuals allegedly sponsoring or encouraging the crisis. He urged security agencies to invite, arrest and prosecute anyone where evidence establishes wrongdoing.
He further appealed to the Boki Traditional Rulers Council and the Boki Local Government Council to organise an emergency peace summit involving leaders of Boje, Isobendeghe and Nsadop communities within the next 14 days. He said civil society organisations should also be included in the meeting to help find a lasting solution to the conflict.
Chief Caesar also advised that PRESCO PLC and other development partners should be involved in the peace process to ensure the safety of their workers and protect ongoing investments in the area.
He stressed that the people of Boki voted for development and should not allow political interests or communal disagreements to destroy projects that have the potential to transform the local economy and improve the lives of residents.
As of the time of filing this report, the Cross River State Government, the police and other security agencies had not issued any official response to the letter.
