Former Cross River State Governor and Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) presidential candidate, Donald Duke, has warned opposition parties against attempting to take on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu individually ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Duke made the remarks during an interview with Symfoni TV, where he urged opposition politicians to put aside their differences and personal ambitions if they are serious about challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to the former governor, the advantage of incumbency already gives the president and the ruling party significant political leverage, making it difficult for a fragmented opposition to mount an effective challenge.
Duke argued that rather than constantly blaming electoral difficulties on rigging, opposition parties should acknowledge their own divisions and work towards forming a united political force.
“The only way you can seriously tackle the incumbent is to come together and have a voice; otherwise we will be factionalised,” Duke said.
He further warned that opposition politicians could be “rigging it against ourselves” through their inability to put aside ego and personal interests.
Describing Tinubu as a formidable political operator, Duke used a striking analogy to warn those who may underestimate the president ahead of 2027.
“Bola Tinubu is not an average politician. You don’t go to fight a lion who also has horns,” he said.
Duke added that confronting such a political opponent with inadequate preparation would leave the opposition at a serious disadvantage.
His comments come as political parties and opposition figures intensify preparations and realignments ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
