A fresh wave of political defections has hit Alankwu Ward in Boki Local Government Area of Cross River State, as a group of youths and supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) reportedly defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The defectors declared their support for Hon. Abang Pius Besong and Hon. John Efere, saying their decision was based on their desire for purposeful leadership, grassroots development and better representation.
The development has generated renewed political activity in the ward, with the new PDP supporters insisting that their decision was not made out of convenience but from a conviction that a new political direction is needed in the community.
The youths said they were particularly encouraged by what they described as the leadership aspirations and vision of Abang Pius Besong and John Efere, adding that they believe both politicians can provide stronger representation and create more opportunities for young people.
They also said their decision reflects a growing willingness among young people in Alankwu Ward to become actively involved in determining the political future of their communities.
According to the defectors, they want a political system that gives greater attention to youth empowerment, infrastructure, economic opportunities, inclusive leadership and grassroots development.
The movement is coming as political activities and alignments continue to intensify across Boki ahead of the forthcoming elections.
The latest development could further reshape the political balance in Alankwu Ward, particularly as political parties and their candidates continue to mobilise supporters ahead of the polls.
For the defectors, their decision marks a new political chapter as they formally align with the PDP and pledge their support for the political ambitions of Abang Pius Besong and John Efere.
