Hon. Emmanuel Usang, candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), has taken an early lead in a street survey ahead of the 2027 Cross River State House of Assembly election in Yakurr 1 State Constituency.

The survey was conducted to gauge the popularity and public perception of major candidates ahead of the 2027 election, with respondents interviewed across rural communities in the constituency.

According to the survey results, Usang polled 51 per cent, placing him ahead of the incumbent lawmaker, Hon. Cyril James Omini of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who recorded 34 per cent.

Hon. James Ibor of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) came third with 15 per cent.

The respondents were drawn from the eight wards that make up the constituency: Afrekpe/Ekpenti, Ajere, Ntan, Biko-Biko, Idomi, Ijiman, Ijom and Ikpakapit.

The result gives Usang a 17-percentage-point lead over the incumbent Omini, while his margin over the PDP candidate stands at 36 percentage points.

The survey, however, represents a snapshot of opinion at the time it was conducted and should not be interpreted as a prediction of the eventual outcome of the 2027 election. Voter preferences can change considerably as political campaigns gather momentum.

Who Is Emmanuel Usang?

His leadership activities also extended beyond the university. He represented Biko-Biko students in the Ugep Students’ Worldwide House of Parliament and served as Secretary of the National Association of Nigerian Students Joint Campus Committee (NANS-JCC), Cross River State Axis.

He currently leads the Youth Parliament in Yakurr LGA, where he has been involved in youth engagement and mentorship.

Usang has also received a number of recognitions, including the Best Leadership Personality award in the Faculty of Biological Sciences and an Award of Merit from the National Youth Service Corps in Yobe State, among others.

Political Journey

Usang previously contested for the chairmanship ticket of the PDP during the 2025 elections before later aligning with the APC.

He has now emerged as the NDC candidate for the Yakurr 1 State Constituency race, positioning himself around grassroots leadership, youth participation, education and community development.

The latest Boki Blog Africa survey could therefore provide an early indication of how the political contest is shaping up across the constituency.

With the 2027 election still ahead, however, the major candidates have considerable time to consolidate their support, reach undecided voters and change the current political equation in Yakurr 1.
