The Cross River State Police Command has arrested a 41-year-old man, identified as Bassey Ekpo, over the alleged setting ablaze of a residence at 8 Miles, Calabar.

The incident was reported on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at the Ikpa Omin Police Division by the occupant of the affected residence, Ekemini Stephen.

According to the police, Stephen told investigators that he was in church when he received a phone call from a neighbour informing him that his residence had been set ablaze.

The police said neighbours subsequently assisted in apprehending Ekpo, who was brought to the police station.

During preliminary questioning, the suspect allegedly told the police that he was sent by his 61-year-old mother to carry out the act.

The suspect's mother, whose name was not disclosed, is currently at large and has been identified by the police as the alleged instigator.

Following the report, police operatives visited the scene of the incident and took photographs as part of efforts to document evidence.

The Command said investigation is ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the alleged arson and establish the involvement of all persons connected to the incident.

The police assured members of the public that anyone found culpable after investigation will face the full weight of the law.
