The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Cross River State chapter, has cautioned the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, over his public comments concerning issues involving Cross River and Akwa Ibom states, particularly the disputed oil wells.
The caution was contained in a statement signed by the Cross River State IPAC Chairman, Engr. Effiom Edet Okon, on Thursday.
IPAC urged Akpabio and other public officials to be careful with their choice of words when commenting on sensitive matters relating to Cross River’s territorial, economic and oil interests.
The council said public statements by senior political leaders carry significant weight and should promote mutual respect, national unity and confidence among communities affected by such issues.
According to IPAC, Cross River has maintained a history of peaceful coexistence and hospitality towards people from different parts of Nigeria. However, it said the state’s accommodating nature should not be interpreted as a willingness to surrender or compromise what it described as the legitimate rights, resources and aspirations of Cross River people.
The council also expressed concern over recent discussions surrounding the status of Cross River’s oil wells, including questions relating to resource ownership, representation and the economic interests of the state.
IPAC called on elected representatives from Cross River in the National Assembly to place the collective interests of the state above personal, partisan or sectional considerations.
The council said the oil-well issue was economically important to Cross River and therefore required that actions, negotiations, public statements and legislative engagements on the matter be guided by justice, equity, constitutional responsibilities and the welfare of residents.
IPAC further urged Cross River senators and members of the House of Representatives to work together and speak with a common position on issues affecting the state’s economic future.
The council said Cross River residents expect accountability and visible commitment from their representatives in protecting the state’s interests.
IPAC Chairman Effiom Edet Okon reaffirmed the council’s commitment to dialogue, democratic engagement and peaceful advocacy on matters concerning Cross River State.
