Calabar, Cross River State — The Cross River State Police Command has commenced investigation into the death of an unidentified woman found dead inside a hotel room along Clifford Street, Calabar South.
The incident was reported to the Police on Monday, September 8, 2026, at about 8:00am by the hotel’s Director, accompanied by the Manager and the receptionist on duty.
According to the Police, preliminary investigation showed that the deceased had lodged at the hotel on the evening of September 7 with an unidentified male guest. The man reportedly booked Room 2 with the woman, but was allegedly not properly documented by the hotel at the point of admission.
The Police said the receptionist later discovered the woman’s body in the room in the early hours of September 8 after noticing that the room door was open.
The receptionist reportedly entered the room, believing the occupants had checked out, and switched on the light to turn off the ceiling fan, only to discover the woman lying unresponsive on the bed.
Police investigators who visited the scene reportedly observed apparent marks of violence on the woman’s face and neck.
Her body was subsequently taken to General Hospital, Calabar, where she was confirmed dead and deposited at the mortuary pending further investigation and possible medical or forensic examination.
Some tablets were also recovered from the woman’s handbag and secured as exhibits. However, the Police said they have not established any connection between the tablets and her death.
Meanwhile, the hotel receptionist has been taken into Police custody for questioning as investigators seek to establish how the guests were admitted and what happened before the woman was found dead.
The Police stressed that the receptionist’s detention does not mean he has been found guilty of any offence.
The Command has also launched a manhunt to identify and locate the unidentified male guest who was reportedly with the deceased.
The Commissioner of Police, Cross River State Command, CP Ajo Geoffrey Ordue, has directed that the investigation be conducted professionally, objectively and in line with the law.
The Police said the investigation is aimed at identifying the deceased, determining the actual cause and circumstances of her death, and establishing the roles, if any, of everyone connected to the incident.
The Command urged members of the public to avoid spreading speculation or unverified information that could interfere with the investigation or infringe on the rights of persons connected to the case.
Anyone with credible information that could help identify the deceased or locate the male guest has been encouraged to report to the nearest Police Station or contact the Cross River State Police Command through its established communication channels.
The Police said further updates will be released as the investigation progresses and more facts are established.
