The Cross River State Police Command has rescued a man from a mob attack in Calabar after he was allegedly accused of stealing mobile phones around Harbour Junction.
The incident occurred at about 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, following a distress call received by the police.
According to the Command, a patrol team was immediately deployed to the area and met a man identified as Chukwu Ebuka being attacked by a mob.
The police said their operatives intervened, rescued Ebuka and evacuated him to an undisclosed clinic, where he is currently receiving treatment for multiple injuries sustained during the attack.
In connection with the incident, the police arrested Azubike Micheal, 56, who was allegedly identified as the person who instigated the mob and encouraged others to subject Ebuka to jungle justice.
He remains in police custody as the Command investigates the circumstances surrounding the attack and the allegations of mobile phone theft that reportedly triggered it.
The Commissioner of Police, Cross River State Command, CP Ajo Geoffrey Ordue, reaffirmed the Command's commitment to protecting lives and property, preventing crime and maintaining public order.
The Commissioner also warned residents against taking the law into their own hands, stressing that anyone suspected of committing an offence should be handed over to the police for investigation and prosecution in accordance with the law.
He urged members of the public to report suspected criminal activities and emergencies promptly rather than resorting to mob violence.
The Command said its intervention demonstrates its commitment to responding swiftly to threats to life and public safety, adding that further developments will be communicated as the investigation progresses.
