The Cross River State Police Command has arrested a 16-year-old male suspect following the fatal stabbing of a 20-year-old man, identified as Uwem Daniel Akpan, at Peters Street, Awi, Calabar.
The incident reportedly occurred on Monday, August 31, 2026, at about 7:30 p.m., following an alleged misunderstanding between the victim and the suspect.
According to the Police Command, Akpan was reportedly stabbed during the incident and was immediately rushed to the Naval Reference Hospital in Calabar for medical attention.
However, the 20-year-old was confirmed dead at the hospital.
Following his death, his remains were subsequently recovered by members of his family, while the police commenced investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The Police Command confirmed that a 16-year-old male has been arrested in connection with the death and is currently being held in police custody as investigations continue.
The Command said it is working to establish the circumstances that led to the alleged stabbing and determine the extent of the suspect's involvement in the death of Akpan.
The case is also being processed for transfer to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Calabar, where further investigation and appropriate legal action will be undertaken in accordance with the law.
The police have appealed for calm among residents and urged members of the public not to take the law into their own hands.
The Command assured the public that the incident would be thoroughly investigated and that further information would be made available as the investigation progresses and relevant facts are established.
The development has raised concern in the area, particularly as the suspect is reportedly 16 years old and the deceased was only 20.

The Command reiterated its commitment to investigating the incident and ensuring that the matter is handled in accordance with the law.
