Professor Stephen Odey, the Cross River State Commissioner for Education, has emerged the new Chairman of the Forum of Commissioners in the state.
Odey was elected alongside other members of a new executive during a meeting of the forum on Tuesday, September 15, 2026.
According to the Cross River State Ministry of Information, the decision was unanimous and was aimed at repositioning the forum for a more robust and result-oriented direction.
The chairmanship position had been vacant for several months following the resignation of Victor-Felix Idem, the former Commissioner for Local Government Affairs.
The election was presided over by the Vice Chairman of the forum and Commissioner for Health, Dr. Egbe Ayuk, who formally announced the vacancy before members proceeded to elect the new leadership.
The new executive has Odey as Chairman, Hon. Edema Irom as Vice Chairman and Pst. Hon. Ekpenyong Cobham as Secretary. Hon. Dr. Helen Egodo was elected Welfare Officer, while Hon. Etieka Lawrentia Ita became Financial Secretary and Capt. Eno Inah (Rtd) Treasurer. Hon. Patrick Egede emerged Publicity Secretary.
The meeting also featured a moment of silence in honour of Hon. Dr. Eka Williams, the late Commissioner for Power and Renewable Energy. Members expressed condolences to Governor Bassey Otu and the people of the state over his death.
After the meeting, the commissioners visited the Governor at his residence, where they briefed him on the outcome of their meeting and received his remarks on the way forward.
The development puts the Education Commissioner at the head of a forum that brings together members of the state executive council, with the new leadership expected to coordinate the forum's activities under its renewed direction.
