The Senate of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) has suspended nine students for one academic session over their involvement in examination misconduct.
The university’s Public Relations Unit disclosed the decision in a statement made available to journalists in Calabar on Monday, September 21, 2026. The suspension followed the Senate’s consideration and approval of recommendations from the institution’s Examination Misconduct Committee.
The affected students have been suspended for the entire 2026/2027 academic session and are expected to return to their studies in the 2027/2028 academic session.
Five of the students are from the Department of Theatre and Media Studies in the Faculty of Arts. The other four are from the Department of Human Nutrition and Dietetics, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences; Department of Geology, Faculty of Physical Sciences; Department of Pharmacology, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences; and Department of Sociology, Faculty of Social Sciences.
The suspension was formally communicated to the students through letters signed by the university’s Registrar, Dr Chukwuka Icha.
UNICAL also directed the Acting Chief Security Officer, deans, heads of departments and other relevant units to take note of the decision and ensure that the suspension is fully enforced.
The latest disciplinary action comes amid other examination-related sanctions at the institution this year. In July, UNICAL suspended 19 students for one academic session over examination misconduct, while earlier in March, nine students were suspended over examination malpractice and result-related offences.
For the nine students affected by the latest decision, the sanction means missing the entire 2026/2027 academic session before they can resume their studies in the following session.
