Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, has appointed former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr Betta Edu, as Director of Finance and Fundraising for the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship campaign council ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Edu will serve in the campaign council established to support the re-election bid of Governor Otu and his deputy, Dr Peter Odey.
The appointment places the former minister among key political figures expected to coordinate the party's campaign activities as the APC begins strengthening its structures ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
According to reports, the campaign council comprises 43 directorates and 4,412 members drawn from the 18 local government areas of Cross River State.
Edu, an indigene of Adadama in Abi Local Government Area, is a prominent APC stakeholder whose political activities have extended beyond Cross River State to the national level.
Her latest appointment comes shortly after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu named her Deputy Director of Women Mobilisation in the APC Presidential Campaign Council ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The two appointments place Edu in both the state and national campaign structures of the ruling party, giving her responsibilities in the mobilisation of financial resources for the Cross River governorship campaign and the mobilisation of women for the party's presidential campaign.
As Director of Finance and Fundraising, Edu is expected to contribute to efforts to coordinate campaign financing and raise funds to support the APC's activities across the state.
Her appointment comes as political activities begin to gather momentum ahead of the 2027 elections, with political parties expected to strengthen their structures and mobilise supporters across communities.
For the Cross River APC, the challenge will be to translate its growing campaign structure into grassroots support while convincing voters that the administration deserves another term.
With thousands of members reportedly listed in the campaign council, attention will also be on how the party connects its political machinery to the concerns of ordinary residents, including road infrastructure, employment, education, healthcare and the rising cost of living.
The 2027 election is expected to provide another opportunity for Cross River voters to assess the performance of the incumbent administration and decide whether Governor Otu should continue for another term.
