A concerned Cross Riverian, Bassey Inyang, has questioned the level of development in Akpabuyo Local Government Area, Cross River State, calling on Governor Bassey Otu and the Commissioner for Works, Engr. Pius Ankpo, to explain the condition of road projects promised to the people.
Inyang expressed concern over what he described as the slow progress of road construction in the area, particularly the Ikot Ekpo Eyo Esuk MBA Village road and the 23-kilometre Ikot Edemesa–Abakot–Ikot Ekpo Esuk Eyo Abasi OBO Road.
According to him, tractors and other construction equipment were brought to the area last year with promises that work would begin on the roads. However, he alleged that the projects have yet to deliver the expected results, raising questions about the government's commitment to improving road access in Akpabuyo.
He said the people had expected the arrival of the equipment to mark the beginning of serious construction work that would make movement easier for residents, farmers, traders and other road users.
Instead, he expressed fear that the projects could remain unfinished, leaving residents to continue facing the difficulties associated with bad roads.
Inyang also raised concerns about road safety, warning that the condition of the affected routes could put motorists, passengers and other road users at risk if the necessary construction work was not carried out.
He called on Governor Otu and the Works Commissioner to provide clear information about the status of the projects, including what has been done, what remains to be done and when residents can expect the roads to be completed.
The concerned Cross Riverian further questioned whether there were completed projects in Akpabuyo that residents could point to as evidence of the government's development efforts in the area.
According to him, government performance should not be judged only by political support, party loyalty or promises made during political activities. He argued that the people should also be able to assess the government through projects that have been completed and are already making life better for them.
Inyang maintained that the responsibility of any government goes beyond making promises, stressing that the government must provide basic infrastructure and create opportunities that improve the welfare of the people.
He said the people of Akpabuyo deserve to see the results of government activities in their communities, especially in the area of road construction, which is important for transportation, farming, trading and other daily activities.
He urged the state government to show the people what has been achieved so far and take the necessary steps to ensure that the affected road projects do not remain unfinished.
Inyang also called for greater attention to the needs of Akpabuyo residents, insisting that the area deserves development projects that can be seen and verified by the people.
For residents who depend on these roads to move their farm produce, conduct business and travel between communities, the completion of the projects would be an important step towards improving daily life.
The questions raised by Inyang have therefore placed renewed attention on the need for clear communication about the progress of road construction in Akpabuyo.
As the people await further action, Governor Bassey Otu and Works Commissioner Engr. Pius Ankpo are being called upon to provide answers about the projects and demonstrate what the state government is doing to address the road challenges facing the area.
