A 44-year-old indigene of Adadama in Abi Local Government Area of Cross River State, Mr. Daniel Emori, who was knocked down by a stray cow at age 21 and has been bedridden since then, has penned an emotional thank-you to Nigerians and Good Samaritans who have kept him alive for 23 years.
Emori, who will mark 23 years on sickbed on Saturday, October 10, 2026, said he remains grateful to the media, the general public and a kind-hearted couple from Northern Nigeria whose intervention changed his story.
Recounting his ordeal, Imori, born May 3, 1982, said after his SSCE in 2000 he travelled to Onitsha, Anambra State, in search of greener pasture. He worked for two years as a Machine Operator with Peter E Venture Plastic Company before using his savings to attend Nchendu Driving/Training Academy.
He later worked as a private and commercial driver before securing employment as a delivery van driver with Rico Pharmaceutical Company.
On October 10, 2003, while on official duty delivering goods to a customer at Fegge along River Niger Bridge, an uncontrolled cow emerged from nowhere and knocked him down with its horn.
He was rushed to a nearby clinic and later referred to the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, UNTH, Enugu, where a cervical spinal cord injury was diagnosed. Doctors demanded N75,000 for surgery, which his poor family could not afford.
He alleged that funds released by the company director for his treatment were diverted by a manager who fed the management with false information about his condition. After months in hospital, he was taken back to Adadama where he remained bedridden.
In 2013/2014, during a communal crisis between Adadama and a neighbouring community in Ebonyi State, when armed youths invaded his community and his people fled leaving him locked inside a house, he made a distress call that was published in the media.
The publication drew the attention of a UK-based Adamawa-born Nigerian who contacted Rev. Charles from Delta State to evacuate him, and a Good Samaritan couple from Northern Nigeria who sponsored his spinal surgery at an Indian specialist hospital in Karu, Abuja, and rented an apartment for him.
Though still bedridden and battling joint stiffness, bedsores and daily feeding challenges, Emori said he is no longer talking about medical treatment.
"Though I'm not even talking about medical treatment anymore. I just want to thank and appreciate the Nigeria media as well as the general public entirely God has been using to sustain me till today of my 23yrs on sickbed," he said.
He said his daily feeding remains his only need as he awaits God's decision on his fate, and prayed God to reward all those who have stood by him throughout this difficult time.
