The Cross River State Police Command has arrested a 35-year-old man, identified as Okputu Bright, over the alleged rape of an 11-year-old girl in Yala Local Government Area of the state.

According to a press release issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, on Sunday, October 25, 2026, the incident was reported at the Okpoma Divisional Police Headquarters on October 24 by the victim's father.

The father alleged that the incident occurred on October 18, 2026, when the suspect allegedly lured the girl and sexually assaulted her before leaving her at a location within the community.

Following the report, the police arrested the suspect and detained him in custody while the victim was referred to a general hospital for medical examination.

The Commissioner of Police, Cross River State Command, CP Ajo Geoffrey Ordue, has directed that the investigation be concluded promptly and that the case file be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation.

The police said the action was part of efforts to ensure that the case was handled in accordance with established procedures and the law.

The Command also reaffirmed its commitment to protecting children and other vulnerable persons, urging residents to report suspected sexual offences promptly to the appropriate authorities.

The police further appealed to members of the public to protect the identity and privacy of the child by refraining from circulating information, photographs or other details that could expose her to further harm.

The Command stressed that the suspect remains presumed innocent unless proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction as investigations continue.
