The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has raised fresh concerns over alleged political violence in Cross River State, calling on security agencies to investigate reported attacks on its political team and bring those responsible to justice.

The party accused armed men of attacking its campaign team during consultations with residents and stakeholders across the state, alleging that vehicles were vandalised, gunshots fired and some supporters injured.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Monday, October 12, 2026, the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Haruna Mohammed, condemned the reported incidents, describing them as a threat to democratic participation and the freedom of political parties to engage with voters.

The opposition party alleged that the attacks were politically sponsored and accused Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, of involvement. However, the party did not provide evidence to substantiate the allegation in its statement.

The PDP also criticised the Otu administration's performance, questioning its record on infrastructure and other development projects. It challenged the state government to account for public funds and demonstrate how government revenue has translated into visible improvements in the lives of residents.

The party maintained that political disagreements should not result in intimidation, violence or attacks on opposition members, particularly as political activities gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections.

It called on security agencies to investigate the reported incidents impartially, strengthen protection for political stakeholders and prosecute anyone found responsible, regardless of political affiliation or position.

The PDP further urged residents and political supporters to remain peaceful and law-abiding, insisting that the reported attacks would not stop it from consulting with voters and presenting its plans for the state.

The development adds to growing concerns about political security in Cross River State ahead of the 2027 elections, following earlier reports of attacks during PDP consultation meetings in Calabar South on October 2, when three people were reportedly injured and several vehicles damaged.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) had denied involvement in those earlier incidents, while the police said they were investigating reports of gunfire, injuries and property damage.

As political activities continue across the state, attention is turning to security agencies and political leaders to ensure that political consultations and campaigns can take place without violence or intimidation.
