Neighbours have raised alarm over the alleged maltreatment of a 7-year-old girl by her aunt in Atimbo, Calabar Municipality, Cross River State.

The woman, identified as Mrs. Unyime Bassey, is accused of repeatedly beating her niece, Edidiong, who lives with her. Residents of the area claim the child has been subjected to frequent physical abuse and harsh treatment.

According to neighbours, Mrs. Bassey also forces Edidiong to perform nanny duties for her biological daughter, Blessing, who is about the same age as the victim. They allege that Edidiong is regularly sent on errands and made to care for the child.
Witnesses say the young girl is often beaten at the slightest provocation.

“How can a child be made to babysit another child?” one concerned neighbour asked.

Residents further maintained that the injuries shown in the photos circulating are reportedly mild compared to previous incidents.

It is also alleged that Mrs. Unyime Bassey and her husband are pastors.

Community members are now calling on relevant authorities to urgently intervene, investigate the allegations, and ensure justice and protection for the child.
