Hon. Victor Abang, Member representing Boki/Ikom Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has formally declared his intention to seek re-election, highlighting his achievements in infrastructure, education, agriculture, and digital connectivity across the constituency.
In a message addressed to constituents, Abang said his administration has remained committed to delivering “real development” since assuming office, pointing to road construction and rehabilitation projects aimed at improving access for rural communities, farmers, and small businesses.
He also cited interventions in the education sector, including the construction and equipping of classroom blocks in communities such as Ubong, Panyia-Bawop, and Etikpe, alongside educational support extended to over 400 beneficiaries within Boki and Ikom.
On rural electrification and safety, the lawmaker noted the installation of solar-powered streetlights across several communities, including Oku/Katchuan, Bashuan, Bendeghe-Afi, Isobendeghe, and Ofutop. He added that solar power systems have also been deployed to support healthcare delivery, particularly at Bansan Isobendeghe Health Centre.
Abang further disclosed efforts to improve telecommunications access, stating that over 35 communities have benefited from facilitated MTN network connectivity, with additional installations underway.
In agriculture and human capital development, he said his office supported constituents with training, grants, and starter packs in poultry, fish farming, cassava, and yam production, aimed at boosting food security and livelihoods.
The federal lawmaker also highlighted youth-focused projects such as the construction of a mini stadium in Boki, as well as investments in tourism infrastructure, including the Baunchor guest house, which he said could unlock economic opportunities for the area.
On the legislative front, Abang stated that he has sponsored bills and motions targeted at institutional development, security enhancement, and long-term growth of the constituency.
While declaring that “the work is not yet complete,” he called for continued support from constituents to consolidate on what he described as visible progress.
Concerns, Criticisms Trail Re-Election Move
However, Abang’s re-election bid is emerging against a backdrop of criticism from some constituents and civic groups, particularly over perceived gaps in constituency development and engagement.
In recent months, stakeholders have questioned the pace and spread of infrastructural projects, with some alleging that certain communities remain underserved despite reported interventions.
The lawmaker has also faced scrutiny over transparency and communication regarding constituency projects, with critics calling for clearer accountability mechanisms and more inclusive engagement with grassroots stakeholders.
Additionally, his role during the “No Road, No Election” protests along the Ikom-Obudu Road has drawn mixed reactions. Some protest organizers previously accused the lawmaker of attempting to influence or discourage the demonstrations—an allegation that sparked debate within the constituency, though no official position has been publicly confirmed by his office.
Political observers note that while Abang’s supporters point to his legislative efforts and targeted interventions, his challengers are likely to campaign heavily on issues of road infrastructure, equitable project distribution, and responsiveness to local concerns.
