The Nigeria Police Force, Cross River State Command, has arrested a suspected gun runner and recovered two locally fabricated firearms in Odukpani Local Government Area.
The suspect, identified as Okon William, a 60-year-old male, was apprehended by operatives of the Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit following credible intelligence on his alleged involvement in illegal arms trafficking within Ubanbat Community.
According to a press release issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, the arrest was carried out on April 19, 2026, at about 5:00 p.m. after security operatives swiftly mobilized to the area. A search conducted on the suspect led to the recovery of two locally fabricated long guns concealed in his possession.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect is part of a wider network engaged in the illegal fabrication and distribution of firearms. Police authorities disclosed that the suspect has already provided useful information that is aiding ongoing investigations aimed at dismantling the criminal network.
The Commissioner of Police in Cross River State, Rashid B. Afegbua, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to tackling the proliferation of illegal arms and ensuring the safety of lives and property across the state.
He called on residents to support security agencies by providing timely and credible information that can assist in curbing criminal activities.
The suspect remains in police custody and is expected to be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend other members of the syndicate and recover additional weapons.
Residents are encouraged to report suspicious activities through the Police emergency lines as the Command intensifies operations against criminal elements in the state.
