Panic and concern have gripped residents of Cross River and Akwa Ibom States following the abduction of more than 15 passengers in a suspected piracy attack along the busy Calabar–Oron water route last Friday.
The victims were said to be traveling by boat from Calabar to Oron when the assailants struck mid-journey, intercepting the vessel and forcefully whisking passengers away to an unknown destination. Sources indicate that a significant number of those abducted are candidates of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), raising heightened fears given the ongoing examination period.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Cross River State Command stated that security agencies have launched a coordinated operation to rescue the victims. He noted that the Command is working in close collaboration with the Akwa Ibom State Police Command and the Nigerian Navy to track down the perpetrators.
According to the PPRO, “intensive search-and-rescue efforts, backed by strategic intelligence and tactical deployments, are currently underway to ensure the safe return of all abducted passengers and the swift arrest of those responsible for the attack.”
The Calabar–Oron waterway, a major transport link between Calabar and Oron, has in recent times recorded sporadic security concerns, particularly involving sea piracy and armed robbery. This latest incident has renewed calls for increased maritime security presence and stricter surveillance along the route.
Families of the victims have been thrown into distress, appealing to the authorities to intensify efforts and ensure the safe rescue of their loved ones. Meanwhile, stakeholders are urging travelers to exercise caution and adhere strictly to safety advisories while using inland waterways.
